Local Economic Development
Poverty Alleviation through Local Economic Development
Poverty alleviation in Somalia’s villages and small to medium-sized cities requires a local economic development (LED) approach that empowers communities to use their own resources, skills, and opportunities for sustainable growth. Our focus is on creating vibrant local economies through small enterprise development, entrepreneurship training, and access to finance and markets. By supporting value-added industries, agribusiness, and service-based enterprises, we aim to generate income, employment, and inclusive growth for youth and women. Strengthening local infrastructure, governance, and institutional capacity is also essential to ensure that development benefits are equitable and long-lasting. This approach not only reduces poverty but also fosters resilient, self-reliant communities that can thrive amid economic and environmental challenges.
Why Local Economic Development Matters
Local economic development is essential for achieving balanced, inclusive, and sustainable growth across Somalia. By creating jobs and livelihood opportunities closer to where people live, it helps reduce migration pressures to overcrowded urban centers such as Mogadishu. Strengthening local economies ensures widespread and equitable development, allowing rural and small-town communities to share in national progress. Moreover, local economic development provides a foundation for the resettlement and reintegration of displaced people, enabling them to rebuild their lives with dignity and stability. Investing in local economies therefore not only combats poverty and unemployment but also promotes social cohesion, resilience, and long-term national stability.

What We Do to Support This Goal
To achieve the goal of inclusive and sustainable local economic development, the Somali Rural Development Centre (SRDC) implements a range of community-driven initiatives that empower people, strengthen local economies, and build resilience:
Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise Development – We support rural entrepreneurs and small businesses with training, mentorship, and access to finance to stimulate job creation and innovation.
Skills Development and Employment for Youth and Women – We provide vocational and business skills training to enhance employability and encourage youth participation in productive economic sectors.
Agricultural Value Chain Development – We promote market access, processing, and value addition to increase farmers’ income and strengthen local food systems.
Infrastructure for Growth – We help improve essential rural infrastructure such as roads, water supply, storage facilities, and energy systems that enable trade and economic activity.
Local Governance and Institutional Capacity – We build the capacity of local authorities and community institutions to plan, manage, and sustain development investments effectively.
Inclusive Resettlement and Livelihood Restoration – We support displaced people in reintegrating into local economies through livelihood support, social services, and community-based recovery initiatives.
