Focus Areas

Our priorities

SRD think tank focuses on three interconnected priorities:

Reviving Rural Economy: The revival of the rural economy is crucial for ensuring food security, employment opportunities, and income generation. Given the significant contribution of the rural economy to the country's GDP, focusing on agricultural and livestock production can address the growing population's needs and reduce rural exodus. By promoting sustainable farming practices, access to markets, and value addition in the agricultural sector, rural communities can harness the potential of their economic activities for their own prosperity and the country's development.

Capacity Building on Good Governance: Establishing good governance in rural areas is vital for creating an enabling environment for development. The lack of capacity and resources at the federal and state government levels has hindered the effective functioning of rural institutions. By promoting transparent, accountable, and inclusive governance, rural communities can feel a sense of ownership over public institutions, reducing the risk of tribal conflicts, power struggles, and corruption. Good governance can foster social acceptance, ensure equitable access to resources, and promote peace and stability.

Environment and Climate Change: Rural communities in Somalia face significant environmental challenges, including natural disasters and human-induced environmental degradation. Droughts, floods, land degradation, deforestation, soil erosion, and biodiversity loss pose serious threats to livelihoods and exacerbate tribal conflicts over scarce resources. Addressing climate change and implementing environmental conservation measures are crucial for restoring rural livelihoods, ensuring social stability, and reducing conflicts. Climate change adaptation strategies, such as sustainable land and water management practices, can enhance resilience and contribute to long-term sustainability.

By focusing on these priorities, SRD think tank can effectively promote sustainable development solutions that address the specific needs and challenges of rural communities in Somalia. Collaboration with experts, policymakers, international development agencies, and rural stakeholders will be essential to ensure comprehensive and effective interventions that lead to improved quality of life, economic growth, social stability, and environmental sustainability in rural areas.
